Remember Inner Power

Power is a force. Inner means situated inside. Therefore, let us remember our force situated inside.

Quick Story

To be transparent and a bit vulnerable, I have trouble with remembering my inner power. I have a passion for education and classroom experiences for children. I can design a lesson that will have children fully engaged and mentally growing like I'm in some type of zone. I have felt this passion for over 20 years. and I am ALWAYS looking for ways to improve my practice. And still there are days when I feel like 'Why would anyone listen to me?' And at first it seems like that feeling is related more to confidence than inner power. But the fact that I have sometimes allowed that feeling to make me shy away from certain opportunities to present my passion to others, makes me feel a bit powerless - like I've been overcome by fear. And that powerless feeling won't let me speak up and have the courage to really help the masses of children that I imagine I can touch through helping their teacher. The children are what this is all about. If I don't remember my inner power, then I can't help. Remembering my inner power leads me to remember the skills I've gained and continue to build upon. Remembering my inner power leads me to my self-confidence and knowing that we are all learning, and we all have something to share with humanity - mine is the gift of teaching children how to learn. What inner power do you need to remember? Or maybe you have it all figured out.

Science we know so far...

A study: Self-affirmation activates brain systems associated with self-related processing and reward and is reinforced by future orientation

This study shows that certain parts of the brain linked to rewards and personal value play an important role in self-affirmation (thinking positively about yourself). Some brain areas connected to thinking about yourself and imagining the future are especially active when self-affirmations focus on future goals. These brain activities were also linked to real behavior changes, meaning that self-affirmation can actually make a difference in what people do. Overall, the study helps us understand how the brain supports positive thinking and shows a new way to study self-affirmation in different situations

Journal Activity

In your journal, deliberate on the following questions: Describe a time when you didn’t have enough courage to do something you thought could be good for you or someone else. Did you ever get around to doing it? What was the outcome? Write down a list of items you know would be good for you to participate in, but you have been nervous about or avoiding going forward.  Write one step you can do to go forward with each item on your list?

Quotes and Interpretations

Our deepest fear is not that we are weak. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world…

—Nelson Mandela
