I once knew a little girl who began pulling out her hair in small patches all over her head. Her mother couldn’t figure it out. What had happened to this once happy little girl with a full head of hair? She hadn’t started pulling her hair until she was about nine years old—right around the time she was enrolled in a new school.
One day, her mother and she were having a conversation about what the little girl could do with her hands instead of pulling her hair—something to keep her occupied when she felt bored. That simple conversation led to a powerful realization: in her new classroom, she wasn’t allowed to doodle, draw, or even work in her own math workbook during downtime. She had been instructed by her teachers to sit quietly and wait for the other students to finish.
After being scolded a few times for trying to stay engaged—by doodling or doing extra math work—she developed a new habit: playing with her hair. It was the one thing she could do that didn’t get her in trouble. And once she started twirling a strand, it often ended with her pulling it out.
Was it the stress children feel when they’re forced to wait? Was it the fear of going against a direct order from a teacher? Was it simple boredom taking root in the quiet moments?
There is a way to serve children at different levels in the same classroom. And that little girl is the one who comes to my mind every time I create a curriculum, design a tool, write a guideline—or write a book.
