The Light

Javier and Noah slowly turned to see what Rachel was talking about. From where the trio stood at the entrance, they could see tiny, distant light emanating from within the cave. It seemed so far away; it was a wonder Rachel even saw it. The rain came down heavily. It felt like they had been walking through a rainforest. Standing at the entrance, the trio still had on their raincoats. They slowly put their snacks away, getting ready for their next move. Rachel glanced at the map, wondering if she could locate the light on it. The boys gathered around her.

“Look at the map.” Javier pointed at a glowing dot. “It’s the light.”

The three moved in closer, knelt down on the cool ground of the cave, and flattened the map.

“How can that be?” Noah looked at both cousins with wide eyes. “This is absolutely amazing!”

All the while, the trio looked back and forth between the map and the approaching light.

“It’s like a tiny dot of light on the map, within the cave!” Javier said. “And it is glowing.”

“Just like the compass, the river, and the rocks,” Rachel said.

“Want to go in and take a closer look?” Noah asked.

When they looked up for the fifth time, the light seemed to be moving closer. It seemed to get larger. The cousins could see the shape of it now.

“We don’t have to go in because it’s coming to us.” Javier began to stand first. “And it looks like an orb.”

“Oh, it’s definitely an orb.” Rachel stood up next. “And I’m starting to feel something interesting.”

Rachel remembered what her mom told her about trusting her instincts.

“I feel it too.” Noah rose to his feet.

Noah realized he was feeling very safe and confident about interacting with this light coming toward them. He felt calm. Surprisingly, not one of the cousins experienced nervousness.

“I actually think I’m sensing what you guys are feeling.” Javier joined in.

Javier was happy to experience the same feeling as his cousins. He had struggled many times in the past to be sensitive and notice small things. But this feeling right now was very clear.

“Safe,” the cousins said in unison.

They looked at each other, and the light seemed to move forward from the depths of the cave to where they stood near the entrance—not slow or fast but at a perfect speed. They realized they were sensing the same thing: a calming feeling of safety. Earlier they all agreed that they felt confident about following the glowing map. And now, as the orb came near, it was as if their favorite teacher was walking into the room with a smile; they felt a certain ease.

The cousins looked up, and saw a glowing orb of light hovering at eye level right in from of them.

Hello, my children, the orb of light said without speaking.

Javier and Noah looked around to see where the voice was coming from. Rachel moved in closer to the orb of light with her arm extended, feeling a sense of awe. Somehow she was absolutely sure the words she heard, what they all heard, had emanated from the orb.

Yes, Rachel, you are correct. The voice you hear inside your head comes from me, said the light.

How are you in my head? Rachel thought.

And mine too? Javier said.

And mine? Noah added.

It is up to you whether or not you hear me, the light explained. You choose to hear me.

But why do I hear the others? Javier questioned.

You are together, and you feel the same vibration: safety, the light responded. I connected your thoughts. You will be able to connect one day without me. It will happen when you need it to.

This feels really awesome and weird at the same time. Javier smiled at his cousins.

I know! Noah thought with excitement. How is this possible? I’m sorry; you know I have to ask questions.

We know. And that’s perfect. Your questions make you the special and unique Noah that you are, the light responded.

Does it stop? Can I stop hearing everyone? Rachel thought. And will they stop hearing my thoughts?

This connection is shared, and it flows only when everyone’s hearts and minds stay open, the light explained. You need only do it. Now that you know you can connect, your nature will take over and connecting will be as simple as blinking your eye.

It’s like a super power I didn’t know I had! Javier thought.

Exactly! Rachel joined in.

Yes. The orb of light glowed brighter as if in agreement. And when you would like it to stop, it will stop.

So now what? Why did you show us this power? Noah asked.

There is a journey you need to take. Deeper within this cave, a small creature is trapped. You are going to rescue him, the light said. And you will encounter a moment when you cannot speak.

The trio looked at each other with shock, and in that moment the light disappeared. They had so many questions. But no one spoke. No one was scared either. They stood silent for a moment, in awe.

Ready? Javier thought.

Ready. Both cousins looked at Javier.
