And I'm Feeling Good

Updated: Apr 25

Do you know how to choose to feel good?

Quick Story

Every day is not created equally. I don't feel good every day, even though that's what I strive for. But guess what, I learned had a choice in how I felt. And when I was feeling down I could do things that would change my chemistry and my outlook. You know like when we are feeling under the weather, and we take some vitamins or eat a special soup or drink a certain tea - we can also do things to pull ourselves out of a 'funk' so to speak. Just recently, I had been feeling life's stress and addressing little mini-issues that just come along with the role of being a parent, a wife, a daughter, and a career woman. One morning, I got my coffee and sat outside with my tree friends and just looked up at the hustle and bustle of the squirrels and birds. After a about 20 minutes, my husband peeked out and asked me how I was feeling. and I was happy to tell him, I felt better.

What we know so far...

According to an article in Psychology Today by Dr. Aditi Subramaniam, psychologists have discovered that happiness isn't as complicated as we might think. By asking many people what makes them happy and gathering the answers, we can learn a lot about what brings happiness and what doesn't. Genetics, circumstances, and habits play big roles in our happiness. While genes and situations have some impact, our actions and choices have a significant effect on how happy we feel. We often compare ourselves to others and get used to new things quickly, which can affect our happiness. However, practices like mindfulness and savoring can help counteract these tendencies. Surprisingly, having more time for things we enjoy, rather than material wealth or a new job, tends to make us happiest.

An activity that could lead to a better feeling state..

Ask Yourself: What are some things I feel good about today? Yesterday? Can I create a ‘feel good’ day for myself? A ‘feel good’ morning or evening? A ‘feel good’ hour? How would that look?

A Poem

I Feel Good When…

(more like a list, but that's okay)

By DF Darwood

I feel good when I hear my children laugh

I feel good when I dance

I feel good when I create

I feel good when my little ones rest their heads on my chest

I feel good when the meal I prepared tastes great

I feel good when my toes dig in the warm sand

I feel good when I sniff a sweet perfume

I feel good when I feel the warm water of the shower on my skin

I feel good when I see children playing and working together

I feel good when the air is slightly cool

I feel good when the rain is warm

I feel good when I swim

I feel good when I take the autumn-colored scenic route

I feel good when my shoulders are massaged by strong hands

I feel good when I taste perfect sweetness of my favorite red wine

I feel good just to breathe deeply

I feel good when I share in a hug

I feel good when I smell fresh cut grass… and cake

I feel good when I laugh

I feel good when I see trees and other things green and growing

I feel good seeing water rolling over rocks

I feel good near the lake

I feel good when I am grateful

I feel good when I witness kindness

I feel good when I lay down at the end of a day

I feel good when I open my eyes to a brand new day

That’s it

Your turn.
